A very versatile Pile Driver
The Hooper Pile-X-550C is a specialist digger mounted pile driver that will work with any excavator. It is very simple to attach and operate. The pile driver only requires a hydraulic circuit at the end of the boom and a 12V or 24V electrical supply, normally using the cigarette lighter socket. The electrics will automatically convert either voltage to the correct one. The hydraulic circuit is normally used for a thumb or bucket swivel, which are not needed when using the pile driver. A case drain 3/8”or larger is also required.
A dedicated wiring loom has a control box by the digger operator and it runs along the boom to the Pile-X-550C. The rise and fall of the block is triggered by a button on the control box, and the rest of the movements are controlled by the normal digger controls. This means the Hooper Pile-X-550C can be transferred to other diggers on the fleet quite simply. This obviously makes it a very versatile bit of gear which increases its value to a civil contractor.
Why use a Hooper Pile-X-550C Pile driver?
A minimum digger size of 8 tonnes is required and may need to be bigger in some conditions. The Pile-X-550C has a 5 metre mast and a 500KG block. This sizes suit a wide range of tasks and are a common design from Civil Engineers when specifying the required set of the piles. It is now common for civil engineers to request Contractors use a falling weight from a pile driver to measure the set of the pile. The final set is often measured by dropping a mass of a known weight a specific distance, and measuring how far the pile goes into the ground for that one impact. An example would be a 500KG block on a pile driver falling 2 metres. The engineer may say that with one strike the pile can move no more than 10mm. What we are calling a block is also known as a hammer or monkey.
Vibrating plate pile drivers are quite common, however they cannot be used to measure the set specified by the engineer. This is where falling block pile drivers become necessary. If you need a pile driver for a smaller digger, check out the Klou vibrating Hammer further down the page. For more information please contact Grant or Matt from the contacts page.
Digger mounted pile drivers are often used for retaining walls. Depending on the size of your digger whether the Klou or Hooper Pile-X-550C would be best.

Higgins and Hooper, the perfect pair.
Higgins road construction division were installing road barrier systems along the centre of the Napier Express way using a vibrating head type post rammer. The problem was, it tended to be slow, and the rig was very wide. This meant for traffic control, they had to block one full lane and have traffic flowing on way at a time. This created traffic backlogs and took many extra staff to manage. They wanted a post installer that fitted to the boom of their excavator. Then they could drive down the centre of the road with the traffic flowing each side.
The Higgins management team approached Hoopercivil with their problem and the development team at Hoopercivil started brainstorming. A number of solutions tabled with Higgins were discussed until both teams decided on the best option. This was a heavily modified post driver, which used a regenerating hydraulic system. This hydraulic circuit has a recirculating valve arrangement, which meant very little oil returns to the digger when operating. This means the post driver does not need a special case drain back to the excavator, which is the normal set up. This makes it very simple to attach and operate.
The Fence System
The road fence, which has the wire ropes, has two parts to the post. A length of galvanized pipe hit into the ground, and the actual post, which hold the wires, fits inside this pipe.
The research and development team at Farmgear designed a special system to hold the pipe while installing. This system supported the post, and allowed it to hit it right down until it is flush with the road surface. As this was a special build and unrelated to the Agricultural industry, the new Post installer was sold under the Hoopercivil brand, which specialises in product for the civil and road construction industry.
Faster and more efficient
The Hoopercivil VBI4300 worked as planned, with improved traffic management and faster install times per post. The rig has proven to be reliable and easy to use. For other projects, mounting the VBI43300 to a tractor is another option, which makes the unit very versatile.
KLOU Vibrating Rammer
The Klou Post driver VPD 1 uses hydraulic orbital technology to provide you with efficient post driving capability. This compact unit fits a range of machines whilst causing minimal post damage.
This hardworking rammer is great for steel posts and fine for wooden posts in most conditions.
The Klou vibrating rammer is a perfect solution for smaller diggers and skid steers.
They are manufactured in the UK and distributed soley through Hoopercivil in New Zealand.
